Choosing A Jiu Jitsu School

Choosing A Jiu Jitsu School

The Instructor:

Martial arts / Jiu Jitsu teachers are individuals with their own personalities. There is no way for every teacher way for every teacher to be a great fit for every student. Just as students have different learning styles, teachers have different teaching styles, and there will be times when a teacher-student match is not perfect. Maybe the teacher’s personality is strict and the child prefers nurturance, or maybe the teacher is a stickler for detail and the child feels the teacher is being unfair. This is not only true for a child’s experience throughout Martial Arts / Jiu Jitsu classes, but it will be true for their experience throughout life. On the other side having a teacher who is not a perfect fit is a great opportunity to practice tolerance, patience and empathy for individual differences.

The Location:

Close is convenient but the worse reason to choose a Martial Arts / Jiu Jitsu school. While it maybe be close the main factor is always going to be who is teaching the Jiu Jitsu classes. Also it would be a good idea to ask about the future of the Jiu Jitsu school and if or when they plan on relocating as the school gets bigger.

Pricing:

If you are on a tight budget this can come into play but again paying less and feeling you are getting sub par lessons isn’t great value for yourself or your kids. Some time lower fees will have classes the size of 30-40 kids training Jiu Jitsu at the same time with very limited teacher to student ratio.

Schedule:

This is important cause what good is it is you cant make any of the classes times. Also it’s good to check of how the schedule changes and how many days do they close during the calendar year.

Summary:

Check the Jiu Jitsu School you want to visit and see if the schedule works for you. Visit the school and try a class as all Martial Arts / Jiu Jitsu schools will offer a Free trial. If they don’t allow you try it out first I would skip that business as that’s a major red flag of hiding something. You can ask pricing upfront but without seeing what you are getting for your value you really should try a Free trial first.
