Empowering Kids through Jiu Jitsu

Empowering Kids through Jiu Jitsu

Make your kids feel like contributors rather than troublemakers and kids will me more likely not to get into a power struggle with you.  When you empower your kids by handing over some power you actually see the behavior you are looking for. One example of handing over power to your kids can be done at the grocery store. Let them help out by choosing stuff for themselves. Lets say you wanted your child to only have one treat and you are in the Ice Cream isle and you say No. The rest of your shopping is going to be a power struggle and battle for Ice Cream until you finally check out and go home. Instead you allow your child to put a few things in the cart until you have everything you need. Now tell them they can only have one treat and when they pick one they get what they wanted and you also get what you wanted which was only one treat. Now they feel like they got what they wanted and helped out and the trip wasn’t a 1 hour nightmare. Kids are smart so next time you might need to change it up and say I only have enough money for 1 treat so you need to pick one. To help start the process you can also put an item in that you don’t want and put it back to me a good example.

Empowered Kids are Happy and Content, Obedient and kids who receive regular doses of positive power are more likely to get along with others.

I apply these same technique in my Toronto Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School. One little example is a kid that talks to much. Instead of just saying stop talking, I give them a choice to leave the power struggle  in their hands. I tell them they can be quite or go sit out (or do 100 push ups) and they think they are making a choice. I get what I want as they will choose to be quite or sit out and they are no longer a distraction to the class.
