In a world where so much attention is focused on negativity, comparison, and what everyone else is doing, there is something incredibly powerful about finding something you genuinely love.
Not something you do because you have to.
Not something that impresses other people.
Not something that makes sense to everyone else.
Something that is yours.
For me, and for thousands of other people around the world, that thing is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Find a Hobby and Become Your Own Biggest Fan
One of the best things you can do for yourself is find something that makes you excited to improve.
Become your own biggest fan.
Set goals. Learn. Make mistakes. Get better. Celebrate the little victories.
And most importantly, do it because you want to.
You don’t need anyone else to understand why you love it.
Maybe your hobby seems silly to someone else.
Maybe they don’t understand why you spend so much time learning about it.
Maybe they wonder why you’re excited about something that means absolutely nothing to them.
That’s okay.
It doesn’t have to mean anything to them.
It means something to you.
And that’s what matters.
Surround Yourself With Like-Minded People
One of the greatest benefits of finding a passion is discovering other people who feel the same way.
You suddenly have a group of people who are all working toward something together.
They may come from completely different backgrounds.
Different ages.
Different careers.
Different personalities.
But when you’re on the mats together, you’re all working toward the same thing:
Getting better at Jiu-Jitsu.
That kind of community is incredibly valuable.
You encourage each other.
You challenge each other.
You celebrate each other’s accomplishments.
And when someone is having a bad day, the group helps lift them back up.
Sometimes You Need a Place That Lifts You Up
There is plenty of negativity in the world.
People are struggling with their own problems, and sometimes that negativity gets directed toward other people.
Someone else’s unhappiness can sometimes make them uncomfortable when they see someone genuinely enjoying life.
That’s another reason finding your people matters.
Find a group where your happiness isn’t something you need to apologize for.
Find people who are excited when you succeed.
Find people who want to see you improve.
Find people who are working on themselves too.
When you find that kind of environment, you leave feeling more alive and energized than when you walked in.
And honestly, that’s becoming increasingly rare.
It Doesn’t Matter If Other People Think Your Hobby Is Silly
Here’s something I’ve learned through Jiu-Jitsu:
You don’t need everyone to understand your passion.
Maybe someone thinks it’s crazy that you spend hours learning how to grapple.
Maybe they don’t understand why earning a belt means something to you.
Maybe they think it’s strange that you’re excited about learning a new technique.
It doesn’t matter.
If it brings meaning, excitement, friendship, challenge, and purpose into your life, it’s not silly to you.
That’s enough.
Learn Everything Because You WANT To
There’s something special about becoming obsessed with learning something simply because you love it.
You start watching videos.
Reading articles.
Talking to people who know more than you.
Trying techniques.
Asking questions.
Studying the history.
Learning the details.
Not because someone is grading you.
Not because your job requires it.
Not because you have to.
Because you want to know.
That feeling is straight gold.
It’s one of the things that makes life exciting.
Jiu-Jitsu Gives This to Thousands of People
For me, that passion is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I’ve spent years learning it, teaching it, thinking about it, talking about it, and constantly trying to understand it better.
And I’m far from alone.
Walk into a Jiu-Jitsu academy and you’ll find people who are completely different from one another, but who share the same passion.
Some train for competition.
Some train for fitness.
Some train for self-defence.
Some train because they love learning.
Some simply love being around the people at their academy.
And some started because they wanted to try something new and eventually discovered something that became a huge part of their lives.
That’s the beauty of Jiu-Jitsu.
There isn’t one reason to do it.
Find Something That Makes You Want to Show Up
Life is busy.
Work.
Family.
Responsibilities.
Bills.
Stress.
There will always be another reason not to do something.
That’s why having something you genuinely look forward to can make such a difference.
Something that gets you out of the house.
Something that challenges you.
Something that makes you laugh.
Something that gives you goals.
Something where people notice when you aren’t there and are happy when you come back.
For many of us, that’s Jiu-Jitsu.
You Don’t Have to Be Great at It
You don’t have to be talented.
You don’t have to be athletic.
You don’t have to win competitions.
You don’t even have to be particularly good.
You just have to love doing it.
Improvement comes naturally when you’re passionate about something.
And that’s the best part.
You start as a beginner.
You struggle.
You learn.
You get a little better.
Then one day, something that used to be impossible suddenly works.
That feeling keeps you coming back.
Find Your Thing
Maybe it’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Maybe it’s woodworking.
Maybe it’s cycling.
Maybe it’s painting.
Maybe it’s music.
Maybe it’s fishing.
Maybe it’s something that nobody else around you understands.
Find it anyway.
Find something that makes you curious.
Find something you want to learn everything about.
Find people who share that passion.
Become your own biggest fan.
And give yourself permission to be excited about something just because you love it.
Because when you find something that makes you feel alive, surrounded by people who genuinely want to see you succeed, you’ve found something pretty special.
For me, and for thousands of others, that place is the Jiu-Jitsu mat.
