Don’t Punish Your Child at Home for What Happens in Jiu Jitsu Class

At Greenwood Jiu Jitsu in Leaside, Toronto, we believe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is about more than techniques — it’s about building confidence, discipline, and long-term growth.

One important message I share with parents is this:

Please don’t punish your child at home for something that happened in Jiu Jitsu class.

Even if they didn’t listen.
Even if they were distracted.
Even if they didn’t perform well.

Let me handle that.

Why Punishing at Home Can Backfire

When a child gets disciplined at home for what happened on the mats, something shifts emotionally. Instead of associating Jiu Jitsu with growth and learning, they may start associating it with stress, pressure, or fear.

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Resentment toward training
  • Loss of motivation
  • Anxiety about coming to class
  • Feeling like they are “never good enough”

That’s the opposite of what martial arts should build.

At Greenwood Jiu Jitsu, our goal is to create a positive but structured learning environment where kids are encouraged to improve — not fear making mistakes.

Let Coach Chris Be the “Bad Cop” on the Mats

If a student isn’t listening, lacks focus, or needs correction — that’s my job.

As their coach, I will:

  • Correct technical mistakes
  • Reinforce discipline and mat etiquette
  • Push them to improve
  • Hold them accountable during class

Nothing hurts a coach’s ears more than hearing a child say they were yelled at or punished at home because of something technical that happened in class.

Parents are their main support system. When home stays supportive, kids stay motivated.

Let me be the one who challenges their performance on the mats.

The Right Time to Correct Behavior

Now here’s the key difference:

If your child is not listening at home, that is the right time to correct behavior.

That’s where parental authority matters most.

When kids learn:

  • Respect at home
  • Accountability at home
  • Responsibility at home

It naturally carries over into class.

But correcting a Jiu Jitsu technique mistake at home — or disciplining them because they “lost” or didn’t perform perfectly — can confuse that line.

Building Confidence Through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Toronto

At our kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program in Leaside and East York, we focus on:

  • Confidence building
  • Anti-bullying skills
  • Discipline
  • Respect
  • Long-term character development

Growth in martial arts takes time. Kids will have great days and tough days. That’s part of the process.

The key is consistency — not punishment.

Supporting Your Child the Right Way

Here’s what helps most:

✔ Ask them what they learned
✔ Praise effort, not just performance
✔ Encourage consistency
✔ Trust the coaching process

When parents and coaches work together — not against each other — children thrive.
