The Martial Art Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specializes in ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and choke holds.The assumption is that the stronger, larger, and more powerful opponent will have the advantage. But Jiu Jitsu is about using your opponent’s energy against them. Reckless power and speed will wear out the untrained opponent while your skill and technique will over come the power.

Achieving dominant position on the ground is the trademark of Jiu Jitsu, and includes effective use of the guard position to defend oneself from bottom, and passing the guard to dominate from top position with side control, mount, and back mount positions. This system of maneuvering and manipulation can be likened to a form of kinetic chess when utilized by two experienced practitioners. A submission hold is the equivalent of checkmate in the sport. However, it is possible for a combat situation to continue even after a proper submission is performed.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lifestyle is about training on the mats with your friends who are more like family. Jiu Jitsu also challenges your lifestyle outside the academy. The amount of sleep you get, and what you eat and drink during your Jiu Jitsu off time will affect your performance.
